Although BS EN 61439 is still to be released A & T Enclosures have commenced adoption of the new standard by successfully type testing at IPH, Berlin in accordance with IEC 61439-2. By meeting the new standards, ATE are able to offer compliant assemblies giving customers confidence at a time of transition.
IEC 60439-1 for low voltage and switchgear assemblies dealt with type-tested
assemblies (TTA) and partially type tested assemblies (PTTA) and covered
a varied range.
The standard focussed on TTA meaning that changes in design or substitution of components compromised compliance and even at best, was often left open to interpretation.
The new standard IEC 61439-2, for power switchgear and controlgear assemblies has removed the two type tested definitions and offers clear guidance for variations to the tested design, by use of design rules and calculation. Not only does this method offer assurance of compliance with the requirements it reduces design variation costs and optimises the manufacturing process.
The recent testing involved short circuit tests of devices, main busbars, a neutral test and a protective circuit test. In addition, an IP test was successfully completed. Further tests are planned including heat rise tests and, in line with the new requirements some data obtained from previous tests to BS EN 604389-1 will be re-used.
By working towards fully complying with BS EN 61439-2, once the standard is released, ATE will be able to offer their clients peace of mind that the assemblies supplied can be verified with certification to confirm this.
